1. Introduction

AIX Scholar Program – a unique learning program in UNIX OS

IBM takes great pride in introducing AIX Scholar Program which aims at integrating technology into all aspects of a college education, so the next generation of global workforce will be differentiated by an education that applies real world technologies and class room discussions in an all-inclusive learning program.

1.1 Objective of the Program

Provide a comprehensive ‘training based offering’ on AIX and POWER technology to Educational Institutes to impart ‘hands on’ education to engineering students in India

AIX Scholar Program facilitates the collaboration between IBM with its partners and Educational institutions to focus on enabling a new breed of skilled and talented people.

1.2 Market Scenario

On a smarter planet, nearly everything computes. IBM is helping build a smarter planet. We have learned that our companies, cities and our world is made up of complex systems. We have to make computing-from servers and systems to applications, tools, databases and storage-smarter.

To achieve the goal of intelligent computing, successful companies are taking a new approach in designing their IT infrastructures. These visionary organizations are designing, tuning and managing their IT infrastructure to make it designed for data, tuned to the task, and managed in the cloud. And as a result these companies are poised to make breakthroughs in efficiency that allows them to focus on the task of real business innovation.

In the current scenario, the demand for skilled people- system engineers, skilled developers and IT professionals in India is increasing. We also have to focus on enabling a new breed of skilled and talented people.

There continues to be increased demands on colleges and universities today to provide relevant coursework and practical experiences that prepare students for jobs in today’s growing IT field. Today’s engineers, computer scientists, administrators and developers require a broader view of the business and enterprise systems that will support firm’s efforts to simplify, consolidate, and save resources for the future. Yet there has been a continual disconnect in what is relevant and from where to acquire this talent.

1.3 The need for IT professionals is greater than ever

Between 2010 and 2020 the US, Europe, Japan, China and India will face a shortfall of 32 million technically specialized professionals.

We’ve all heard or experienced these statistics, but there are opportunities to better educate students for a more competitive IT workforce.

The effort of building skills requires assistance and involvement from the entire ecosystem. A strong local relationship between universities and IBM can provide valuable insights into business demands and future education requirements. As a member of this community, you play an important role in assisting educators and students to build skills.

“When the world is flat the only sustainable edge you have is your human talent.”

IT skills are in demand and the need is growing. As technologies advance and businesses strive to simply and reduce energy and costs, IT and business skills requirements are rapidly changing. Many CIO’s worldwide rely on UNIX  as a platform to provides world class performance, flexibility, continuous application availability and energy efficiency.

As firms strive to consolidate their server farms and reduce costs in their enterprise, many are finding that AIX as the purest form of UNIX, provides them the flexible and cost effective virtualization they require to build a technically viable and commercially feasible smart solution.

Many of these same firms are facing a skills shortage, while at the same time they are experiencing continued expansion in technology skill requirements. IBM clients and business partners are building their pipeline of talent for the 21st century, and its necessary to partner with educators worldwide who are willing to enhance their curricula to help students develop skills in AIX running on IBM Power Systems.

The AIX Scholar program is an innovative and flexible program designed to assist colleges and universities in the education of students on AIX and Power System technologies and concepts. The program provides members with access to IBM software, hardware, faculty education, courseware, and many other valuable resources.

The goals of the program are to assist and enable educators to teach the fundamentals of AIX and Power Systems, use real world examples through lab exercises and practical application, and assist in establishing relationships with the Power Systems business community.

1.4 Knowledge Professionals scenario – Skills and Training is key

India’s transition to a knowledge-based economy requires a new generation of educated and skilled manpower. The competitive edge will be determined by the ability to create, share and use knowledge effectively.

Remote Infrastructure Management (RIM) segment has emerged as the key growth engine within the IT Services segment. Between FY2006-10, RIM has recorded the fastest growth within IT Services – at over 50% CAGR

Nasscom states, the Indian IT-BPO industry has proved to be a premier source of mass employment across the country. However, to attain ‘industry-ready’ status, organisations were required to equip their employees with a new set of skills – foreign language capabilities, global business process knowledge, sales and marketing skills, research (business, market, financial) and business analytics.

Some highlights from the Knowledge Professionals Nasscom report

§  India’s talent pool continues to increase with almost four million additions this year, including 700,000 technical graduates available to join the workforce every year.

§  Significant spending on enhancing employability with in-house training and academia partnership, creating talent pool of process and vertical specialists.

§  There will be a much greater focus on ongoing development of specialised skills and capabilities

Therefore, the market is competitive and if students prepare themselves they can ride the wave to capitalize the opportunity.
