The department, formerly known as Department of Animation and Multimedia Technology started in the year 2009. Initially the department offers 3 year diploma programme in Animation and Multimedia Technology to prepare students to make a career in the field of Animation and other related industries. Many students successfully passed out from the department and are doing well in their respective fields.
The department has been upgraded and renamed as the Department of Multimedia Communication and Design (MCD) in 2015 to widen up its scope and started its Under Graduate Bachelor of Design programme from July 2016. In the year 2019, the department started its Post Graduate programme as part of the DeNovu category specialization. The department currently offers diploma programme of 3 year / 6 semester with specialization in Animation and Multimedia Technology, Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) programme of 4 year / 8 semester with specialization in Multimedia Communication and Design and Master of Design (M. Des.) of 2 year / 4 semester with specialization in Multimedia Communication and Design. Earlier the Bachelor of Design programme was affiliated to Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU), Guwahati and the Diploma programme was affiliated to State Council of Technical Education, Govt. of Assam. The M. Des., B. Des. and Diploma programme has been started under CITK’s own academic affiliation from 2019 onwards after the institute has been declared Deemed-to-be-University. The department currently offers PhD degree also under CITK’s own academic affiliation.
DIPLOMA: The Department offers 3 year / 6 semester Diploma programme in Animation and Multimedia Technology. The objective of the programme is to produce Diploma graduates with enhanced skills in the various areas of Animation and Visual Effects as per the requirements of the animation and entertainment Industry.
The diploma programme is aimed to offer skill based education to the students. The syllabus pattern has been designed in such a way that after passing out from diploma, the students could easily face the challenges in the industry sector. The syllabus offers all the basic technical skills required to address in animation and entertainment industry.
BACHELOR OF DESIGN: The Department offers 4 year / 8 semester Bachelor of Design programme in Multimedia Communication and Design. The programme covers subjects of Multimedia, Visual Communication, Animation, Audio-Video editing, Gaming, Digital Design etc. The objective of the programme –
MASTER OF DESIGN: The M. Des. programme in Multimedia Communication and Design is meant to develop Research Abilities, Clear Communicators and Responsible Design Professional among students to become creative problem solvers and to bring about innovative ideas in the area of communication design, multimedia and entertainment industry. It is a 2 year / 4 semester programme and has been considered equivalent to M. Tech. programme in engineering.
The syllabus has been aimed to offer specialized subjects and knowledge in the field of Multimedia Communication design that addresses a holistic approach towards industry, academics, research and entrepreneurship.
PhD in DESIGN: The department also offers PhD degree in the domain of Multimedia Design and its relevant field.
Lab Facilities
The Multimedia Communication and Design Laboratory is currently equipped with 50 up-to-date High End Workstations including 10 iMacs for the students to work on 3D Modeling, Texturing, Rigging, Animation, Lighting, Dynamics, Audio and Video Editing with the latest versions of the 3D Software installed and with Internet Connectivity.
2D Lab (Pre-production)
This lab is well equipped with 10 no’s of Light boxes to carry out 2D Classical animation (Cell animation). Also a system to digitize the hand drawn animations is allotted to line test their animations.
3D Lab1 (Production)
This is where the students start their lab sessions on Flash Animation, Web Design, Photoshop, Modeling, Texturing and Rigging using Autodesk.
Maya 3D Lab2 (Post-production)
The students in the Final year work on their post productions in this lab, which is equipped with more advanced hardware capable of running any dynamics or simulation thrown at it. This is where they learn on advanced topics such as animation, texturing, lighting, rendering, compositing, and conduct VFX & simulation experiments.
Chroma Lab
This lab is where the students get to experiment on VFX shots. A green screen stage with lights and up to date cameras enable our students to learn the fundamentals of VFX and composition. It also acts as a room for them to work on their acting and performance.
Audio and Video Editing Lab
In this lab, the students get to learn Audio & Video editing on a different platform other than Windows. 10 iMac’s with Final cut pro enable them to learn about the process of NLE (Non Linear Editing).
